Have you ever bought a nail polish, put it on, and thought: "Holy crap, why on earth did I even buy this, I wish I could return this, this cost me six dollars, I could have spent that on something good, I hate this so much I don't even want to give it to a friend because they will hate it too, please get this off my nails right now"?
Well that happened to me last week.
Zoya - Nyx
You may be thinking, "Rebecca, that is so pretty, how come you hate it?"
There are a few reasons why.
1) It looks so much nicer in pictures than it does in person. It's more gray and the sparkle is not so prominent.
2) It is sheer, way more sheer than I was expecting, it needed 3 coats and I seriously wanted to do a fourth. That ain't cool for a textured polish because the more coats, the more dry-time.
3) Speaking of dry time, THIS WOULD NOT DRY AT ALL.
I seriously left it on for 30-40 minutes and while yes, it was dry on the surface, it was not nearly set and I could easily have wiped it all off. After that much time. UGH!
I ended up adding topcoat to make it dry, which of course ruined the textured finish. I only had time for one coat of topcoat so it was still textured somewhat but not in a nice way, and I hated it, a LOT.
And to make matters worse, I didn't have time to put on something else, and ended up leaving it on for TWO WHOLE DAYS days because I was so busy studying for an exam and then writing said exam.
The more I had to look at the polish, the more I hated it.
I was sooooooo looking forward to the PixieDust polishes from Zoya but now I am SO turned off.
I bought one more besides this (London) and I am not even sure if I will bother trying it.
From the reviews I've seen, no one else is having the problem I had. Is there anyone out there who is hating the PixieDust polishes with the burning passion that I am?! Gah!!!
Oh no, maybe you just had a bad nail day! I've worn this and I loved it! It does need some time between coats so maybe try it when you have more time next time?
ReplyDeleteI know lots of people that have said they like/love these compared to other textured polishes. Have you tried other brands?
ReplyDeleteAnd you are right, the photos make it look really pretty! Darn deceiving photos.
I've tried several textures and I do love Zoya's - but their Summer ones seem to need less coats. The Spring collection needed 3 for the most part, but the summer ones only need 2 (for me). Julie G Gumdrops and Nicole By OPI Gumdrops I really liked as well
ReplyDeleteoh man! I was really tempted(but have been resisting) to get Nyx, judging from all the beautiful swatches I've seen..
ReplyDeleteI did read that Zoya's PixieDust polishes were really sheer..
Perhaps you should try reapplying this polish another time? ^^
I'm waiting to pick up my OPI Bond Girls polishes.. it'll be my first time trying textures
I won London in a giveaway and was soooooo excited but I ended up hating it. The colors they used for the textured polishes are beautiful (ie Liberty) but the textured finish isn't for me.
ReplyDeleteAwww, this is too sad!! The Pixie Dust polishes are my FAVORITE of all the textures out now. I love how they look sugary-sparkly, and I haven't had a problem with them drying as long as I wait between each coat for it to completely dry. And I like them with topcoat, too, but it requires a good 3 coats or a Gelous/Seche combo to be completely smooth. It's really too bad it didn't work for you :o(
ReplyDeleteAw, this was one of my favs. Mine dried very well, but i used very thin coats. Maybe you got a bad batch? :(
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry you had horrible time with this polish, because it does look really pretty in pics.
ReplyDeleteI still don't have any of Pixie Dusts (the importer said they should arrive in May), but I did have similar experiences with other polishes and I know how frustrating that can be.
That's a shame you didn't like it. I'm not really into the textured look but from all the photos I've seen this out of all of the Zoya ones was the one I really liked.
ReplyDeleteIt's the worst if everyone likes something and it turns out you're the only one who doesn't like it! Happened to me also but: aren't we lucky our tastes aren't the same? We'd be so boring otherwise! :)
ReplyDeleteI thought i'd hate them, but I bought godiva and Chyna anyway and I love godiva!!! It needed 3-4 coats too but it looked great with and without top coat. I'm not sure how long it took to dry but I left each coat to dry inbetween and didn't have an issue. I'm just putting Chyna on now and will see how it goes. I'm sad for you though, because NYX does look like it should be pretty :(
ReplyDeleteCan I say that here (in Italy) Zoya nail polishes are 14-15€ (~19$)?
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling this way about the Ciate Chalkboard kit I just bought. Ugh. Hate it.
ReplyDeleteI liked this one and had no problems, I got tons of compliments and the girls at Sally's fell in love with it. May have been the humidity or some other factor that affected the drying time. I felt more like you did with Godiva, not a good color on me. As they say, different strokes for different folks... it makes the world more interesting that we don't all like the same thing. All in all I love the Pixie Dusts and other brand textured polishes.
ReplyDeleteI didn't buy them but every time I see the swatch cards at the displays I think they are ugly. I just don't like the colors, they look dull to me. And like you said wheres the sparkle! And I do like the Liquid sand, so I don't mind texture polish.
ReplyDeleteYou can't bring them back and exchange them and let them store know that it was difficult and you weren't impressed?
Awww... that's too bad. I have Godiva and Vespa and I love them. I also didn't have any drying issues so maybe you got a weird batch?
ReplyDeleteit makes me sad you didn't like this, i am obsessed with Godiva
ReplyDeleteSounds like you may have gotten a bad bottle? That is so odd. Out of all the textures the Zoyas and Milani have been my faves. For the Spring ones from Zoya I did use Three coats for all the shades. But mine were dry enough for me to function within 45 min. They also wore like iron on me. London was one of the more pigmented ones of the bunch. Maybe you will have better luck with her. Keep your coats thin and wait a little in between. <3!!
ReplyDeleteThey also look really neat layered over cremes and such *wink wink*!
DeleteCris is right--if you can't return it, try it over a matching creme! And I'm so sorry you had this experience, especially since you were stuck with it for two days. :(
DeleteI have this one as well as Godiva and Dahlia, I think they are brilliant. I suppose they aren't everyone's cup of tea though. I like them loads better than OPI's Liquid Sand or China Glaze's Texture polishes. Buuuuut we are all different, that's what makes the world go 'round. I bet you can find a friend who will love it though. :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks so pretty in the pictures! I haven't tried any textured polishes yet but I'm looking forward to the Summer Pixie Dusts!
ReplyDeleteI am very happy with the O.P.I Liquid Sand polishes...dries fast and only needs a max. of 2 coats!! maybe something for you?
ReplyDeleteI am very happy with the O.P.I Liquid Sand polishes...dries fast and only needs a max. of 2 coats!! maybe something for you?
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU everyone for the feedback! with so many positive comments, perhaps I need to give it another try! hmmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteI thought about it some more--the dry time is definitely slower than average. You want to do thin coats and let them dry completely between coats. It meant that it took around 45 mins to get the results I wanted >.< but the wear time was insane! I was away for 5 days and had not even a slight chip anywhere. I wonder if not using a basecoat affects it too--I always use one, but they recommend not doing so. If you did before, maybe try it without and see.
DeleteHopefully that will help! And if not, well its like I said before, one lady's BLEH is another's favourite x
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience :( I'm looking forward to getting some of the PixieDust in the future (specially Stevie, my nickname, I think I suggested it to Zoya :D)
ReplyDeleteI do hope you give it another chance, the color looks really pretty. And if you still hate it know that I'm available to give Nyx a loving home ;D
hmm haven't tried these and I was surprised by this post because it seems like everyone loves these polishes. I can tell you though, knowing my luck I would probably be the other person to dislike them. I'm wondering if you could use quick dry drops, like OPI's, to speed up the dry time? Polish sometimes takes forever to dry where I am because of the high humidity (seriously, I've waited 6 or 7 hours before and my nails still weren't dry) so I'm not sure now I would want to try these!
ReplyDeleteI just reswatched this polish after reading your post. I did not have any of the problems you did with formula and dry time. I thought it dried relatively quickly after each coat, though I did need 3 coats. I initially wore just 1 coat over SH Grey by Grey, which I think is good underwear for it. OPI Rotterdam or Herring would work well, too.
ReplyDeleteI hated this polish and eagerly read your post because I was curious to hear your thoughts. It turns out, my reasons for disliking it are totally different than yours. For me, it's the texture. I just don't like it. I hadn't liked it in pictures, I hadn't liked it on swatch wheels, but somehow thought maybe I'd like it on my nails. I thought I could satisfy my lemming for OPI I Have a Herring Problem and while trying out a texture for myself by going with Nyx. I should've just gotten the shimmery (untextured) polish I wanted instead. I hope you have better luck with Nyx the next time you try it, it seem like lots of people were willing to offer useful tips. :)
